Minister for Energy visits Bacton Gas Terminal

Minister for Energy visits Bacton Gas Terminal

This week National Gas welcomed Michael Shanks, Minister for Energy at the Department for Energy Security and Net Zero, to its Bacton Gas Terminal in Norfolk - one of Britain’s most strategically important pieces of energy infrastructure.

Bacton is a critical entry point for gas flowing into the National Transmission System (NTS), handling around a third of Britain’s gas imports. From here, energy is transported safely and reliably across the network - keeping the lights on, industries powered and homes warm.

The terminal also plays a key role in providing flexibility to Britain’s gas market through its interconnections with the Netherlands and Belgium, strengthening the resilience of the wider system.

During the visit, the Minister met with on-site teams and saw first-hand how the terminal operates, including the systems, processes and expertise required to maintain the safe and reliable flow of gas across the network.

The visit also highlighted the dedication and technical expertise of the teams who operate the terminal every day, ensuring the continued resilience and efficiency of the network.

Looking ahead, Bacton is set to play an important role in Britain’s evolving energy system. The terminal has the potential to become a leading clean energy hub, leveraging existing infrastructure to support hydrogen and carbon capture in the future.

Nick Sides, East Region Director at National Gas, said:

“Bacton is a vital part of our national infrastructure, playing a critical role in keeping energy flowing safely and reliably across Britain. Visits like this are an important opportunity to showcase the scale and importance of the work taking place here every day.

“I’d like to thank our teams on site for the professionalism, expertise and commitment they continue to demonstrate. Their work underpins the resilience of our network and the security of Britain’s energy.

“As our energy system evolves, sites like Bacton will continue to play an important role in supporting a secure and reliable transition for the UK, so it was great to see this being showcased to the Energy Minister.”
