The critical role Scottish infrastructure plays in powering Britain

Scotland has been at the heart of powering Britain for generations.
Through the National Transmission System (NTS), up to 25% of Britain’s gas is transported from the St Fergus Gas Terminal to the nation. This is essential to fuel power stations, industry and homes across the country.
As part of the energy transition, certain industries, such as petrochemicals and gas power stations, are looking at ways to decarbonise. However, many can’t electrify and need carbon capture technology to reduce their emissions, to safeguard jobs and protect key heavy industries.
Through SCO₂T Connect – Scotland’s first-of-its-kind CO₂ transport system - we are supporting the Scottish Cluster to decarbonise. The onshore pipeline will transport captured CO₂ approximately 200 miles from emitter sites in areas such as Mossmorran and Grangemouth to the interface point at St Fergus. It will then be transported offshore and stored safely in depleted oil and gas fields beneath the North Sea as part of the Acorn Project.
We recently welcomed Members of the Scottish Parliament (MSPs) to our Avonbridge and Aberdeen sites, to showcase the role of our sites in Britain’s energy security and how they support clean energy in Scotland.
Avonbridge Compressor Station welcomes MSPs
Hosting two of our 60 compressor units, Avonbridge is crucial to keep gas flowing across Scotland and beyond.
Our teams at the station hosted Scottish Cabinet Secretary for Transport Fiona Hyslop MSP and former Cabinet Secretary for Net Zero, Energy and Transport Michael Matheson MSP, who received an in-depth look at the station’s contribution to Scotland’s energy security. They showcased the vital role the compressor plays in transporting methane through the NTS and discussed the site’s role in our hydrogen and Carbon Capture and Storage (CCS) projects.

Welcoming Alexander Burnett MSP to Aberdeen Compressor Station
To wrap up a week of activity, we were also visited by Alexander Burnett MSP to Aberdeen Compressor Station. The cold day highlighted the importance of the three compressor units in moving gas from the North Sea coast south, keeping the lights on, powering industry and heating homes.
We also discussed the importance of hydrogen and CCS as part of the energy transition, and how in the future, our infrastructure will be repurposed to achieve this goal.

Alexander Burnett MSP with David Marshall, National Gas Regional Director for Scotland and North of England
We’re grateful to our Avonbridge and Aberdeen colleagues for their warm welcome, professionalism and pride in the work they do every day to keep our network running safely and reliably.
Speaking about the visits, the Regional Director for Scotland and North of England, David Marshall said:
“Welcoming key decision makers to see first-hand the excellent work that our teams do each day to meet the UK’s energy needs really brings to life the importance of what we do.
“The enthusiasm and pride of everyone involved in keeping the gas flowing really resonates with our visitors too. Thank you to everyone involved in these visits and for being such great advocates of National Gas.”
