Celebrating National Apprenticeship Week 2026 across National Gas

Celebrating National Apprenticeship Week 2026 across National Gas

National Apprenticeship Week (NAW) is a UK‑wide, week‑long celebration that brings together employers, apprentices, training providers and educators to highlight the positive impact apprenticeships have on individuals, businesses and the wider economy. The 2026 theme, Skills for Life, focuses on how apprenticeships help people of all ages develop the practical skills, confidence and experience they need to thrive throughout their careers.

As NAW comes to a close, we’re reflecting on an inspiring programme of activity across National Gas that showcased the strength of our Early Career community and the opportunities available within our organisation.

Engaging future talent across the UK

Throughout the week, our Early Careers teams attended careers fairs across the country, meeting enthusiastic young people, building awareness of National Gas, and supporting them as they explored the next steps in their career.

Current apprentice Georgia Cutter, and former apprentices Michael McDonnell and Reece Ellingham were invaluable in these conversations, sharing their first-hand experiences and offering valuable insight to their own career journeys.

At SETA's Engineering Apprenticeship Jobs Fair, Katherine Mockeridge and her team engaged with local students to discuss the breadth of opportunities apprenticeships can unlock, and how practical learning can support long-term career success.

To continue building awareness among young people, apprentice Kasim Hojeij visited a Sixth Form in Coventry, speaking with students about National Gas, the range of apprenticeships we offer, and the exciting early career pathways available within our organisation.

Showcasing careers at National Gas

Earlier in the week, Nadine Graham and Clare Johnson hosted our first-ever National Gas webinar in partnership with Schools Outreach. They were joined by apprentices Ehema Orim and Alice Black, along with former apprentice Michael McDonnell, who shared their experiences of progressing from apprenticeship routes into to a thriving career at National Gas.

Championing green skills in Parliament

We were also pleased to partner with Andrew Pakes MP to host a roundtable in Parliament. The session brought together politicians, industry, education specialists, and apprentices to explore the significant opportunity Peterborough has in becoming a hub for the green skills that will power the clean energy mission.

We were especially proud to invite three colleagues from our National Gas apprenticeship programme - current apprentices Eva Waters and Emily Mehedintu, along with recent graduate Mark Lees - to step inside Parliament to contribute their voices and perspectives into the conversation.

Sharing sector insights

During the week, Shaun Taylor, contributed to the Pipeline Industries Guild webinar, joining fellow employers and training providers to share real experiences from across the wider gas and energy sector. The session highlighted the importance of collaboration and the range of pathways available to those entering the industry.

Celebrating success of Degree Apprentice graduates

We also celebrated the achievements of five of our Degree Apprentices - Lily Ganchi, George Bettles, Lewis Howard, Mark Lees and Luke Parkinson – who recently graduated from Aston University after four years of balancing academic study with hands-on experience. They are stepping into their careers with confidence, real-world skills and the support of mentors who helped them grow. Their journey shows how apprenticeships don’t just fill skills gaps - they build capability, opportunity and skills for life.

Our continued commitment to Early Careers

National Gas continues to invest significantly in building a highly skilled workforce. In 2025, we welcomed 36 new apprentices and have invested £3.6 million in training to date. Over 100 apprentices are now directly employed across our business, contributing to critical national infrastructure and supporting the UK’s future energy resilience.

A huge thank you to all colleagues, apprentices, partners and young people who engaged with us throughout National Apprenticeship Week. We are incredibly proud of the passion and talent across our Early Careers community, and we remain committed to supporting the next generation of engineers, innovators and problem‑solvers.

We look forward to continuing this important work — not just during NAW, but all year round.
