Ofgem visits FutureGrid in Spadeadam, Cumbria

The National Gas FutureGrid team at DNV Spadeadam, Cumbria, hosted several visitors from Ofgem, including Director of Price Controls Steve McMahon and Head of Asset Risk and Resilience Mark Hogan.

They were joined by members of the National Gas RIIO-GT3 team to discuss our current understanding of future gas transmission network applications and how our RIIO-GT3 plans could inform these future scenarios.

Phase 1 of the FutureGrid programme successfully demonstrated that our National Transmission System (NTS) can handle hydrogen. Now, in Phase 2, the project features two ground-breaking initiatives – compression and deblending for transport – that sit at the core of our plans to decarbonise the NTS. These initiatives will enable essential hydrogen testing to identify the full range of opportunities for repurposing our network.

Our innovation work throughout RIIO-T2 has been vital in helping us maintain the resilience of our current network and identify future opportunities as we transition to net zero.

Thank you to Ofgem for visiting – we look forward to welcoming Steve, Mark and their team back in 2025 to share our continued progress.
