Officials from the Department for Energy Security and Net Zero visit FutureGrid
National Gas had the privilege of hosting Paul Monks, Chief Scientific Adviser, and Ashley Ibbet, Director General for Energy Infrastructure, from the Department for Energy Security and Net Zero (DESNZ) at our FutureGrid hydrogen facility at DNV Spadeadam in Cumbria.
Guided by Director of Clean Power, Corinna Jones, Paul, Ashley and their team toured the facility to explore how Great Britain’s gas transmission network can help achieve the goals outlined in the National Energy System Operator’s (NESO) Clean Power 2030 Report.
Our FutureGrid facility at DNV Spadeadam is leading critical research into the UK's transition to hydrogen energy. The project, which leverages decommissioned parts of the National Transmission System (NTS), is a global-first for testing hydrogen transportation.
FutureGrid is using real-world assets to transport hydrogen through a dedicated section of a gas transmission network, demonstrating blends ranging from 2% hydrogen up to 100%. Following the successful completion of Phase 1, the project has now entered Phase 2, focusing on testing hydrogen compression and deblending during transportation.
During the visit, our team showcased how this micro-transmission network enables us to perform comprehensive safety and operational tests within a controlled environment, simulating real-world conditions of the National Transmission System (NTS).
National Gas is immensely proud of the pioneering work underway at FutureGrid. Sharing these insights across the sector is a core part of our mission. We look forward to welcoming Paul, Ashley and their team back in 2025 to demonstrate further progress in our journey to transform the UK’s energy landscape.
