National Gas and GASCADE collaboration boosts Europe’s hydrogen economy and energy independence
Announced at the World Hydrogen Summit & Exhibition with Luke Rowlands, Business Development Director from National Gas and Ulrich Benterbusch, Managing Director from GASCADE.
At the World Hydrogen Summit 2025 in Rotterdam, National Gas and Germany’s national gas transmission operator GASCADE announced a partnership to create the UK-Germany Hydrogen Corridor.
National Gas, as operator of Great Britain’s gas National Transmission System (NTS), signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with GASCADE to explore the feasibility of a hydrogen pipeline between the two countries.
The project will include offshore pipes which start in either Teesside in England or St Fergus in Scotland. The second section will be GASCADE’s AquaDuctus pipeline project in the North Sea – enabling offshore hydrogen to be introduced into the pipeline, before connecting to mainland Germany and the continent.
The UK-Germany Hydrogen Corridor will provide transport capacity for up to 20 gigawatts of hydrogen transportation capacity and operate on a bi-directional basis. This initiative contributes to European efforts to build a hydrogen economy that can compete on the global stage, while enhancing energy resilience and independence for the UK and EU.
Jon Butterworth, CEO at National Gas, emphasised: “Our partnership with GASCADE is evidence of our determination and capability to work together, not only to support Europe's climate ambitions but importantly to build a stronger and more resilient energy system that benefits us all”.
This is the latest in a series of hydrogen initiatives by National Gas, including work at the St Fergus site, with SCO2T Connect and the Scottish Cluster.
