Felindre’s role in Britain’s energy system
Felindre Compressor Station is a key part of Britain’s energy infrastructure, with up to a third of the country’s gas passing through the site on any given day.
Felindre also has an important role in supporting the UK’s transition to a lower carbon energy system. The site is already home to hydrogen ready compressor units which are part of the progress to prepare the network to transport hydrogen safely in the future. Hydrogen blending could help decarbonise heavy industry across Wales and complement renewable energy through the green transition.
To showcase the site’s importance, National Gas recently hosted a series of political visitors at Felindre. Over the course of a week, guests had the opportunity to meet colleagues on site and learn more about the vital role Felindre plays in keeping gas flowing safely and reliably across Wales and the wider UK.
First to visit was Mike Hedges, MS (Member of the Senedd / Welsh parliament) for the Swansea East constituency. Mike is the lead Labour candidate for the Gŵyr Abertawe at the upcoming Senedd election in May - which covers Felindre.

We then welcomed three Plaid Cymru candidates for the Gŵyr Abertawe constituency: Gwyn Williams, Safa Elhassan, and Rhiannon Barrar.

To wrap up a busy seven days, Tonia Antoniazzi, Labour MP for Gower and Chair of the Northern Ireland Select Committee visited.

During the visits, guests were given an overview of how the station operates, the engineering expertise behind its success, and the investments being made to prepare the network for the future.
It was also a great opportunity for some of the apprentices working onsite to speak about their experiences, showcasing the green skills being developed locally, and the opportunities available for the next generation of energy professionals. The strong pipeline of engineering talent across National Gas remains a real source of pride, reflecting the skills and future ambition demonstrated by our apprentices.
Corporate Affairs Director, Jake Tudge, commented:
“This is a critical time in Wales with the forthcoming elections and there is nothing like seeing our sites in person to understand the scale and important role of gas in our energy system today, and for many decades to come. We look forward to building on these relationships and continuing to promote the important role of molecules.”
West Region Director, Craig James, added:
“I was proud to hear that every visitor commented on the warm welcome, the interesting nature of their visit, and the desire to support National Gas moving forwards.
“This is a great outcome for our business as we continue to make a positive impression on key political figures. The Western transmission route for LNG is often overlooked when we consider energy security. Visits such as these are key to ensuring that the importance of our network is understood through all levels of government.
My thanks to the team at Felindre for the time taken to host these visits during an already busy winter period.”
Across all the visits, one thing was clear: the dedication of the teams at Felindre, the strength of its engineering capability, and its central role in supporting both Wales and the UK’s energy future.
