West Winch Gas Diversion Project

Project overview

National Gas will be carrying out works to divert two high‑pressure gas pipelines in the West Winch area. This work is required to accommodate a new road linking the A47 and the A10, supporting planned infrastructure and future development.

The pipeline diversion is a technically complex and safety‑critical operation. All works will be delivered in line with strict national safety standards and engineering requirements to ensure the continued safe and reliable operation of the gas network.

For more information about the access road and wider works please visit: West Winch Housing Access Road - Norfolk County Council

Why the work is needed

National Gas has an obligation to divert the existing gas pipelines to enable the delivery of the new road scheme and planned future housing development in the area.

The diversion will ensure:

  • The long‑term safety of local homes, businesses and infrastructure
  • Continued reliable gas transmission across the region
  • Compliance with national engineering and safety standards

Where the work will take place

The works will be carried out in land near Chequers Lane, between North Runcton and West Winch.
A site compound will be located in this area to support construction activities.

When the work will take place

  • Earliest works on site: From May 2026
  • Initial visible activity: Mid‑May 2026
  • Overall duration: Works are expected to continue through 2026 into 2027
(exact dates are subject to programme development and permitting)

We will keep this page and local stakeholders updated as the programme is finalised.

What to expect during the works

Some activities associated with the diversion may be noticeable to people living and working nearby. This may include:

  • Construction traffic travelling to and from the site
  • Temporary changes to local access arrangements such as public footpaths

We understand these activities can be disruptive, and we will work to keep impacts to a minimum wherever possible.

Managing impacts

We are committed to working closely with the community and stakeholders throughout the project. This includes:

  • Providing advance notice of works that may cause disruption
  • Keeping local authorities, parish councils and elected representatives informed
  • Monitoring and responding to community enquiries
  • Taking steps to reduce noise and disruption where practicable

Community and stakeholder engagement

We are engaging with a range of stakeholders, including:

  • Norfolk County Council
  • The Borough Council of King’s Lynn and West Norfolk
  • North Runcton Parish Council
  • West Winch Parish Council
  • Local councillors and representatives

Our aim is to ensure people have access to clear, timely and accurate information about the project
