Our Businesses

Our businesses

National Gas is the backbone of Britain’s energy system. We transport gas throughout Great Britain, repair and maintain gas pipelines, and manage the meters that measure consumption for millions of homes and businesses.

Our nationally important infrastructure and operations help to keep the lights on, fuel businesses and keep homes warm.

As well as transporting gas to more than half a million businesses and 23 million homes, we are leading the way into a clean energy future. Gas provides the energy security to support renewable electricity generation, and we are developing our infrastructure to transport hydrogen and carbon dioxide across the country.

One organisation, three businesses, 2,000 dedicated people.

Aberdeen Compressor

National Gas Transmission

Owns, operates and maintains the gas National Transmission System (NTS), comprising around 5,000 miles of high-pressure pipelines and associated assets. The NTS transports natural gas to power stations and major industries, storage facilities, interconnectors, and to the Gas Distribution Networks (GDNs) that take gas into homes and businesses. Our NTS is the motorway network for gas, transporting energy at high speed to every part of the country – every minute of every day.
