Pressure uprating projects

Wider context

As part of the upgrade of the gas pipeline which connects South Wales with the UK wide network, we will need to improve the capacity of several of our existing Above Ground Installations (AGIs) so they can handle the increased pressure as more gas comes through the pipeline at a quicker rate.

This increased pressure is referred to as uprating. To ensure stringent safety standards continue to be met once the pipeline is uprated, we need to not only improve our existing AGI sites but also reinforce the pipeline at certain strategic points.

There are ten AGI sites in all and seven of these will require relatively minor upgrade work to the existing structures.

The remaining three will require significant improvements including extensions to the existing structures through construction work.

The areas of the pipeline requiring reinforcement will involve making the walls of the pipeline thicker and stronger or placing concrete slabs above the pipeline to give it greater protection.
