National Gas has today (Thursday 31 July) confirmed investment of £33 million in vital energy infrastructure in Aberdeen to maintain the reliability, safety and resilience of its network.

The £33 million investment at the Aberdeen Compressor Station, committed as part of the company’s current regulatory funding package, will involve upgrading the operating systems that monitor, manage and control the movement of gas throughout Britain.

It will also bring benefits to the local economy, with significant investment going directly to regional businesses in the area.

The commitment from National Gas will ensure the ongoing flow of gas to power businesses in the North East of Scotland. It is also expected to create jobs and strengthen supply chains, further contributing to National Gas’ role in supporting thousands of offshore energy jobs directly and indirectly in Scotland.

The following local businesses will benefit directly from the investment:

  • Dron & Dickson – a leading Electrical, Control & Instrumentation company, Dron & Dickson is expanding its capabilities in supplying electrical equipment, building bespoke junction boxes, and providing vital skills.
  • ESK Control – a specialist engineering consultancy in gas turbine control systems, ESK Control is using the funding to provide expert resources in process safety and cybersecurity.
  • John Duncan Plant Hire – a civil engineering contractor, John Duncan Plant Hire is leveraging the investment to undertake vital infrastructure work, including excavations, ductwork installation, and reinstatement.
  • Northern Platforms & Staging – a scaffolding firm that is enhancing its capacity to design, supply, erect, and inspect scaffolding systems, ensuring safe and efficient management of working-at-height activities across construction and maintenance projects.

National Gas’ sites across Scotland play an important role in the transmission of gas from the St Fergus Gas Terminal, which supplies around 25 per cent of Britain’s gas, to users including power stations and industry across Great Britain and beyond. The Aberdeen Compressor Station is one of the 21 compressor stations which comprise around 60 compressor units across Great Britain, and plays an important role in moving gas from north to south.

Ian Radley, Chief Commercial Officer at National Gas, said:

“This major investment in Aberdeen Compressor Station is an important part of our commitment to ensuring a safe, secure, and resilient gas transmission network for Britain.

“This project will also deliver significant benefits for the local economy, and we are proud to be working with skilled businesses right across Aberdeenshire, supporting jobs, strengthening supply chains, and helping to grow regional expertise in engineering, construction, and infrastructure.

“Energy is a big part of the economy in this part of the world – with Aberdeen playing a key role in moving gas from north to south - and this investment will ensure it can continue to do so efficiently and securely for years to come.”

Andrew Bowie, MP for West Aberdeenshire and Kincardine said:

“A quarter of the country’s gas flows through the Aberdeen Compressor Station and is pushed on to the rest of Britain.

“This station is a vital part of our country’s national infrastructure which contributes to keeping lights on, homes warm, and industry running, and this investment is a powerful vote of confidence in the future of our region’s energy sector.

“I’m particularly proud that funding is going directly to local businesses, supporting jobs, skills, and innovation right here in the North East of Scotland. It’s a clear demonstration of how we can deliver both energy security and economic opportunity for our communities.”

As a responsible system operator, National Gas closely monitors supply and demand year-round, proactively identifying potential risks and taking necessary mitigation steps. The company also works closely with the Department for Energy Security and Net Zero (DESNZ) on initiatives to enhance the UK's energy security. As the UK moves to an increasingly decarbonised energy system, and observes increasing demand for electricity, gas continues to complement the intermittency of renewables and play a crucial role in Britain’s energy future.
