INNOVATION
Innovation Document Library
Welcome to the Innovation Document Library, your central hub for exploring our innovation journey so far. This page brings together our key innovation publications, including annual summary reports, strategy documents, and other supporting materials that capture the challenges we've addressed, the projects we've delivered, and the value we've created.
Spanning RIIO-1, RIIO-2 and, as we progress, RIIO-3, these documents provide a transparent record of our innovation activities, insights, and achievements, while showcasing how innovation supports the delivery of a safe, reliable and net zero-ready energy network for the future.
Innovation RIIO-3 Strategy Document 2026
We've just published our Innovation Strategy document for RIIO-3
This strategy sets out how we will focus our innovation activity over the next five years. It has been shaped by the priorities of our business, the needs of our stakeholders and the changing external landscape in which we operate.
Our refreshed innovation themes: Energy Security & Network Resilience, Low-Carbon Transition, Safety & Integrity, Digital & Data, and Customer & Business provide a clear structure for where we will direct our effort, investment and collaboration.
Throughout RIIO-3, we will continue to place great emphasis on value, evidence and implementation.

Innovation in RIIO-2
Over the course of RIIO-2, we used our innovation funding to develop a project portfolio that tested new technologies, generated evidence and explored the role of hydrogen and carbon dioxide in the future energy system.
To showcase this, we’ve published a RIIO-2 summary document and combined it with our 2025/26 Annual Summary, to share some of our key achievements over the past five years.
The document provides an insight to the collaboration and learning that have helped shape our innovation portfolio and provides an overview of the progress made during 2025/26 as we closed out RIIO-2 and transitioned into RIIO-3.
